The Surveillance State Comes For The Monarchs
Fifteen monarch butterflies tagged with tiny digital trackers took flight from Southeast Portland's Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge this month, the first digital tracking of Pacific Northwest monarchs. Unlike old-school paper tags, the solar-powered trackers update in real time and can be followed on the free Project Monarch app. One Portland butterfly, nicknamed Portlandia, had already crossed into California within ten days. Scientists hope the data helps target habitat restoration as monarch numbers continue to decline. OPB

Sports Bra Standoff Spills Into the Streets, Again
Trans rights supporters and a right-wing group faced off outside the Sports Bra on NE Broadway Sunday afternoon, with the confrontation spilling into the surrounding blocks. Mace was used during the clash, and a nearby business was damaged. Portland Police said officers used de-escalation tactics to separate the crowd before a scuffle inside a nearby grocery store led to one arrest. The investigation into the weekend clash is ongoing. TriMet Wants You to Track the Tracks
TriMet released part five of its "MAX Close Calls" dashcam series Monday, a compilation of near misses with cars, pedestrians, and scooters near the tracks. TriMet says every close call shown was avoidable, and it's urging people to follow traffic signals and look both ways before crossing. The agency also asks riders to keep hoods and umbrellas out of their sightline and to turn down headphones so they can hear an approaching train. TriMet first started posting the series to YouTube ten years ago. KATU
🦌 FOREST PARK SPOTLIGHT

Portland Monthly has published a great list of the 8 Best Forest Park Hikes. Forest Park is one of the country’s largest urban forest preserves. It goes on for 8 miles and includes of 80 miles of trails. We are blessed to have an amenity like this. Sometimes I look at it from the East side and I can’t even believe that whole thing is a park. It just looks like the endless wilderness.
