Wednesday sunny and 64 today. Will it ever rain again? Or is this just life now? We have some great reads today. Remember the arctic fox that was wandering around lost in 2024? Good news for her today. 800 City of Portland staff are threatening to strike. Read on to see what names Portlanders chose for our snowplows. Tonight is the Trailblazers home opener, hosting Phoenix Suns, and Digable Planets are playing a sold out show. Finally, Ja Morant is now dunking on the Portland stag sign. Can they do that? About 800 City of Portland workers could strike as soon as Nov. 1. Members of the City of Portland Professional Workers Union voted 93% to authorize a strike after talks broke down over wages. The city's final offer includes about $9.1 million in new spending, while the union's would require about $19.8 million. Luna the Arctic Fox Is Making Friends in Wisconsin

Luna, the arctic fox found wandering near Willamette Park in October 2024, is making friends at the Ochsner Park Zoo in Baraboo, Wisconsin. She shares an enclosure with arctic fox Apollo and two black bears, Taglu and Aspen. Zoo manager Katie Gries says Luna often starts games of chase and pulls Apollo's tail each morning. Luna is a fully sponsored animal and a fan favorite with visitors. Arctic foxes are illegal to keep as pets in Oregon. OPB

Portland's Five Newest Snowplows Get Their Names

The Portland Bureau of Transportation unveiled five new snowplow names Tuesday: Damian Blizzard, Mississlippy, Keep Portland Cleared, A Sleetcar Named Deicer and Pink Pony Plow. More than 6,000 people voted on the names in a ranked-choice poll. Plow drivers also showed off their skills on an obstacle course of orange cones in a parking lot. The new names bring the number of named plows to 10 out of PBOT's fleet of 56. portland.gov

COMMUNITY CENTER SPOTLIGHT

photo from Google

Portland’s Community Centers are the real ‘third space.’ There are 9 of them around the city, and I am a huge fan. Mt Scott Community Center recently got a major renovation and now the gym is huge and has everything you could want. These places have pools, teen hang-out spots with games, classes like yoga and Zumba, drop-in volleyball games, art classes, the list goes on. Use the link above to find your nearest center, then scroll to Activities for the list of classes. Day-passes cost $6 and include access to everything, even classes and the pool.

📚 ON THIS DAY

On this day in 2003, Portland hit 81 degrees, the warmest October 21 in the city's weather records, which date back to 1871.
