Fewer Little Kids in Portland
Portland has fewer little kids than it used to. New census data shows children under 5 make up 3.9% of the city’s population, down from 6.4% in 2010. A Portland State University researcher says Austin, Minneapolis, Denver and Seattle have seen similar declines. The drop is part of the thinking behind Portland Public Schools’ proposal to close at least 11 schools. District enrollment is about 42,000, down 15% since 2018. Oregonian

A Portland Bat Wins Big
Congratulations to Ryan GosWING, a Portland pallid bat who won the Bureau of Land Management’s 2026 Bat Beauty Contest. The contest ran leading up to Halloween in celebration of Bat Week. It is the fourth year in a row an Oregon bat has taken the top prize. The BLM says bats help control insects, pollinate plants and spread seeds. Pallid bats hunt by sound, using their large ears to listen for insects moving on the ground. KATU

🍺 PORTLAND BEER SPOTLIGHT
I asked Reddit what is the best beer in Portland right now, then went to try the top 3 with my friend.
#3 Wanderlust IPA, from Breakside: This beer was the perfect example of an IPA. Clean and crisp and exactly the right bitterness. We both felt this deserved a higher placement than Reddit gave it.
#2 Pine Top West Coast IPA, from Little Beast: This is their flagship beer and it’s easy to see why. It’s similar to the Wanderlust but with a small flavor I couldn’t quite place. Very delicious.
#1 Lichen American IPA, from Gigantic: I loved drinking this beer. It was advertised as having notes of grapefruit and that flavor really popped. It was a bit more sweet and less bitter than the other two, with a much more complex taste. Yum!
The other thing about Gigantic is the food was amazing. The smoked wings are some of the best wings I’ve had in PDX and I’m a wing guy. The Old Bay shrimp roll was excellent and paired great with the vinegar and dill fries. Gigantic really has it all.
Wayfinder beer was also ranked high enough for an honorable mention, though I haven’t tried it yet myself.
