🚨 THE NEWS

City Survey Finds Shelter Guests Want Complaints Handled Better

A new city survey finds people who stayed at Portland’s village-style shelters are unhappy with how complaints are handled. The Ombudsman’s office heard from 228 guests across nine shelters. More than half said staff did not handle grievances well, and most called the process for being asked to leave unfair. Most also said they felt safe and respected and preferred a shelter to the street. Portland Solutions says it investigates every grievance. OPB

Portland Ends Permit Fees for Pinball and Pool Tables

This winter, for the first time in nearly 100 years, Portland businesses won’t need a special permit to run a pool table or pinball machine. The old rule goes back to when amusement devices were tied to vice. About 200 businesses currently pay between $50 and $1,000 a year for it. City Councilor Steve Novick proposed ending it, and the council approved the change in October. The timing helps owners, who typically file permit applications in November and December. COZY COFFEESHOP SPOTLIGHT
Instagram post

On a rainy autumn day, nothing beats a cozy coffeeshop. I asked Reddit which are the coziest coffeeshops in Portland. These were the answers. We went to investigate.

#3 Coffee Time, on NW 21st. We had an excellent homemade chai and a pumpkin latte here, with cozy seating by the window. The back area has some dark and moody corners plus one perfect booth for the lucky couple that beat us there.

#2 Fehrenbacher Hof, on SW 19th. I had a double espresso which was actually not good, but Lynette’s apple cider was the perfect choice. There’s a table for two downstairs by a bay window that was peak coziness, plus a room in the back.

#1 Floyd’s Coffeehouse, on Ladd’s Circle. If this isn’t cozy then IDK what is. We got a tasty cappuccino, an iced latte, and some bagels, which we ate at a red velvet loveseat. I love it here. So did half of Portland- wow it was packed!

Then all the caffeine caught up with me, giving me a very un-cozy jittery feeling. I smoked some indica and balanced it out nicely. Stick with me, guys- you may learn something 😉

On this day in 1792, British Lt. William Broughton spotted a big snowy peak from the Columbia River near Sauvie Island. He named it Mount Hood.
