Wednesday It’s another wet day with a high of 55. There’s still time to get free yard trees through the city’s giveaway program, and it’s a good time to plant them. Multnomah County says it’s now too late to mail in your ballots on time, but you can still use the ballot drop boxes until 8pm Nov 3. In the news today Timbers captain Deigo Chará announces retirement, direct flights to Mexico City are back, and the Secret Service is checking Portland for credit card skimmers. Wait, what? Aren’t they just bodyguards for the President?

Diego Chará Will Retire After Next Spring

I Almost Threw Out My Keurig. It Wasn't Broken.

Every cup from my Keurig started tasting weak, flat, stale — so I unplugged it and stuck it in a closet. Then I learned the dirty secret of grocery store K-Cups: by the time a pod reaches your kitchen, it's usually spent months going from factory to warehouse to truck to shelf. The flavor oils are long gone. Some brands even over-roast to hide it.

The fix wasn't a new machine. It was fresh pods from Angelino's, a family-owned L.A. roastery that roasts, packs, and ships within 3–5 days — straight to your door, from 39¢ a cup. Over 1,000,000 happy customers. 50+ flavors, no subscription required, and 15% off your first order, applied automatically at checkout.

Secret Service Checks Portland Card Readers for Skimmers

The U.S. Secret Service spent two days checking Portland-area card readers for illegal skimming devices. Agents found none. The visit was part of an eight-day outreach effort that also reached Washington and Alaska. Agents say to watch for tape, glue, loose parts and a shifted security sticker. They recommend tap-to-pay or a chip card. Oregon Trail Cards do not have chips yet, and new chipped cards are expected to be mailed statewide in early 2027. KATU

🥚 MAYWOOD PARK SPOTLIGHT

How did a small city end up inside Portland like a little yolk in our egg? Believe it or not, these absolute strangers weren’t unlike us at one time. That is until the 60s, when a brand new I-205 was announced going right through their neighborhood. These Portland residents had no say in the matter. Since they weren’t a city, they didn’t have the power to protest like Lake Oswego did. So they got together and they made their own city. They fought hard but ultimately lost, and 80 homes were demolished. Maywood Park today has its own mayor and city council, plus a lovely walking path. OPB
