Monday cloudy but dry, high of 55. Hey that was a nice weekend, huh? I can’t remember the last time it didn’t rain on Halloween. Today marks the beginning of PDX Mac and Cheese Week, by the Actual Portland with $10 plates of specialty macs all across the city. Look at the one from Bunk Bar- Wowza. Sad news today that our sweet baby elephant Tula-Tu is sick. Please don’t let anything happen to her. Remember the chemical spill that killed Johnson Creek? Well I don’t think anyone will be surprised to learn where it came from. There is some good news here about volunteers at a cemetary. Go get some mac and cheese and a great free show at Laurelthirst.

This is the last day to sign up for the next Portland Drizzle Dinner Club. Making friends as an adult is weirdly hard. Especially after 2020. That’s why we made the Dinner Club. You take a quick personality quiz to get matched up for dinner at a table with 5 other people, then afterwards all the tables can get together at a nearby spot for drinks. Get started with the quiz.

  • Wednesday, Nov 4 @ 6:30PM

  • Downtown Portland (your restaurant is announced that morning)

  • $15.99 ticket, doesn’t include dinner

🚨 THE NEWS

Oregon Zoo Elephant Calf Tula-Tu Is Being Treated for EEHV

The Oregon Zoo’s baby elephant, Tula-Tu, is sick with elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, or EEHV, a rapidly progressing disease that young calves are particularly susceptible to. Care staff noticed changes in her energy and behavior on Oct. 24, and veterinarians began treatment before Oregon State University’s lab confirmed the diagnosis. The zoo says she has remained stable. Tula-Tu received an mRNA vaccine earlier this year, but this is a different strain. OPB

Portlanders Spend Halloween Tending a Historic Cemetery

On Halloween morning, more than 50 volunteers gathered at Columbia Pioneer Cemetery in Parkrose for Metro’s first Halloween cemetery cleanup. They used butter knives, chopsticks, brushes and rags to clean lichen and mud from old headstones, and they picked up litter. The 2.5-acre cemetery, founded in 1877, is one of 14 historic cemeteries Metro manages. Metro’s next cemetery tending is Friday, Nov. 13, at Multnomah Park Cemetery. OPB

State Investigates Chemical Spill Tied to Johnson Creek Fish Kill

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is investigating a September chemical spill it says likely killed a large number of fish and other aquatic animals in Johnson Creek. Precision Castparts Corporation Structurals estimated that 394 gallons of sodium hydroxide, plus smaller amounts of other chemicals, were likely released through its stormwater system. The Oregon Health Authority says there is no ongoing health risk. DEQ is considering civil penalties and corrective orders. KATU

REAL ESTATE SPOTLIGHT

1719 NE Knott ST might be better called a manor than a home with 8600 sqft, including the carriage house (which is bigger than my house 😭). Built in 1916, the Bowman House sits on 6 city lots and has the nookiest breakfast nook you’ve ever nooked. It features an actual dining hall, multiple fireplaces, and a suprising amout of knick-knacks in the office. No really- what’s up with that? Do they come with the house or do you have to bring 1800 of your own? This masterpiece is listed by Andrew Pienovi with Christie’s Real Estate.

📚 ON THIS DAY

On this day in 1982, Portland voters approved Ballot Measure 51, creating the city’s first public police review committee.
