Eater PDX still can't quit Portland's Thai food scene
Eater Portland's running guide, "Where to Find Stunning Thai Food in Portland," keeps growing because the scene refuses to sit still. The map leans on the city's specialists: Langbaan's tasting menu (a James Beard winner), Yaowarat's Bangkok-Chinatown mashup in Montavilla, Rukdiew's khao soi in Buckman, and PaaDee's comfort-food classics on East Burnside. Who passed, who flunked: county health inspections are in
Multnomah County's latest round of restaurant inspections is out, and most of the city passed with flying colors. Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen and Thai Bloom all scored perfect 100s. Not everyone was so lucky. Nordstrom's Marketplace Cafe scored the worst, a 67, after inspectors found raw beef stored above raw fish, a dishwasher not sanitizing, and foods held well past their date. Tov Coffee got dinged for old mouse droppings near the back door. Inspections happen twice a year, unannounced, with results posted at the register. Portland Tribune
A parole officer who found her calling in second chances
Maria Randall set out to work with kids. Instead she's spent a decade as a Multnomah County parole officer, working with adults through START Court, a program for people whose property crimes trace back to substance use. She checks in on clients, spots the patterns that keep landing them in trouble, and pushes them toward treatment. "Nothing happens until we address the addiction," she said. A judge told her the Spanish translation of "probation" is "conditional liberty," a phrase that stuck: not punishment, but a supervised shot at rebuilding. Portland Tribune
