Tula-Tu, the Oregon Zoo's one-year-old Asian elephant calf, just became the first elephant on the West Coast to get a vaccine against EEHV, a herpesvirus that kills young elephants fast and hits close to home here. Her mother, Rose-Tu, lost a previous calf, Lily, to the same virus in 2018. Tula-Tu has had two doses so far, with a third planned this fall, and zoo staff say she's shown zero side effects and is still her usual playful self. A parent group wants Portland Public Schools to ban devices through second grade, then cap screen time hard: 20 minutes a day for grades 3-5, less by subject for older kids. Chromebooks would go back to classroom carts instead of going home. YouTube, social media, and AI chatbots would be blocked outright during school hours. It would be one of the strictest policies in the country, if the teachers union and school board actually go for it. We’ll see. Oregonian

Portland Police cleared out a longtime nuisance house on SE 111th Avenue last Thursday, arresting five people, four wanted on felony warrants. Neighbors had been dealing with stolen cars, drug activity, and disturbances for a while, enough that the city, the DA's office, and Portland Permitting teamed up on a vacate warrant. Two people barricaded themselves inside and tried to escape out back before getting caught. Officers found a stolen vehicle, four bottle-fed kittens, and conditions bad enough that they needed protective suits and respirators to go in. Seven more people are still under investigation. KATU
