Tuesday. 💥BOOM! haha yes! Sunny and beautiful today with a high of 82 in Stumptown. If you're just tuning in, we are coasting on love and explosions here today. Eating good, living good, feeling good. We’ve got some lead and asbestos- they say it’s minimal. We’ve got some Trimet cuts- they say it’s minimal too. Round it all off with maximum coffee at Trung Nyugen Legend.
🚨 THE NEWS
Portland showed up with lawn chairs to watch a building blow up
Crowds packed The Fields Park on Monday with cameras and telescopes to watch crews detonate the water tower atop the fire-gutted Centennial Mills warehouse. "I am here to watch a building blow up," one Beaverton spectator told KATU, which about sums up the vibe. Nearby residents were less thrilled: some at the Encore Condominiums, which faces the site, said the city's communication about asbestos and lead risk from the demolition dust was thin, especially for lower-income neighbors close by. Officials maintain the risk is low. KATU

Downtown's James Beard food hall finally has a permit
The James Beard Public Market cleared a major hurdle Thursday, landing its construction permit from the city for the long-stalled project at Southwest 6th and Alder. Crews found a century-old timber frame once they got into the building, which pushed the opening from this summer to 2027, but organizers say the wait's worth it. The finished market will run nearly 40,000 square feet, house close to 40 small businesses, and create about 200 jobs, with a teaching kitchen, butcher, fish market, cheese shop, and cookbook store among the offerings. One architect called it the fastest city permitting turnaround he's seen in 30 years of Portland projects. KATU
TriMet thins again
Starting Sunday, Aug. 23, TriMet is cutting service on 34 lines, killing two bus routes outright, and shortening the MAX Green Line so it only runs between Gateway and Clackamas Town Center. Riders headed downtown from the east side will need to transfer. The agency says it's staring down a $300 million budget gap and has to cut service by at least 10% by 2028, after costs jumped 56% since 2019 while fare revenue hasn't kept up. More cuts are already being teed up for summer 2027. KATU
🍵 COFFEE SHOP SPOTLIGHT

@portland.drizzle on Instagram
Trung Nyugen Legend Cafe opened in 2025 on SE 84th and Powell. Guys I tell you my jaw dropped when I walked in. Lynette literally told me to shut it. It’s absolutely buzzing inside- it’s cute- it’s got insane options like a touch screen take-out menu, but the drinks! The drinks! I got a Vietnamese egg coffee it was creamy rich and flavorful. We got a vanilla beignet and it hit. Pastries , wild concoctions to drink, even pho. There is another location in Beaverton.
