Parents push back against PPS closures
Portland Public Schools' board considered a plan Tuesday that could close or consolidate up to 20 schools, driven by declining enrollment and a mounting budget shortfall. The district calls it a "rightsizing initiative." Board member Matt Coolidge pushed back, saying he's "far from convinced that rightsizing is the best or only step we can take." Portland Association of Teachers president Alisha Chavez said the district only remembers it's in a financial crisis "when it's time to cut classrooms, close schools, lay off educators." No final list yet — PPS expects to bring draft consolidation options to the board in November. KGW
Portland Wants Data Center Deals Done in Daylight
A Portland City Council committee backed a resolution urging the city to stop signing non-disclosure agreements with data center companies. Sponsored by Councilors Tiffany Koyama Lane and Mitch Green, it would also require early council notice on any data center inquiries. It's a statement of intent, not a law — the resolution doesn't ban data centers, touch zoning, or stop the city administrator from signing an NDA if one lands on the desk. Advocates raised concerns about power and water use; some called for an outright moratorium. Council could later consider a harder ban if this doesn't work. KATU
