Thursday October begins with a partly sunny high of 75. Can you believe it’s October already? Time to decorate for Halloween, get some mums on the porch, and have pumpkin spice lattes and beer. In the news today we have 5 great nurseries to visit and inspire, we have a good old-fashioned grape stomp to celebrate Portland Wine Co, and some brand new passenger train cars from Amtrak. Tonight is First Thursday in the Pearl, an outdoor street gallery featuring over 150 local artists.

5 Portland Nurseries To Visit This Fall

Now that autumn has begun, it’s the perfect time of year to plant your perennials for next year. The soil is still warm enough for new roots to settle in, while the approaching rain keeps them happy all winter. Here are 5 Portland Nurseries that I recommend.

  • One Green World in outer SE specializes in edible plants. They carry a carefully selected assortment of fruiting trees, shrubs, vines, and herbs with many rare varieties. They have fruits you’ve never even heard of, but don’t worry- all the plants they carry will grow in Portland.

  • Lux Perennials Nursery on NW Skyline has a 2 acre display garden with 8000 plants to inspire you, along with a pond, walking trails, and breathtaking views. Lux has a sale going now until Oct 18 with up to 30% off all plants. Check their hours before you visit.

  • Portland Nursery has been a Portland staple since 1906 with two locations in SE. Their website is packed with information and tips, plus they offer classes and workshops. You’ll find everything there- trees, natives, annuals, perennials, along with a large collection of seeds and bulbs, so pick out some tulips and make that spring garden pop

  • Cornell Farms Nursery and Cafe in SW. A nursery that has it’s own brunch cafe and a coffe shop? Am I in heaven? Cornell Farms has an impressive selection of plants to browse while you sip. Get tickets for their Spooky Garden Tea service which is served in a Victorian teahouse

  • Xera Plants is in Sherwood but it is worth the trip. They specialize in ‘xeric’ plants which are drought-tolerant. Easy low-maintenance in our dry summers. Many of their plants are Oregon natives. Xera’s staff are highly knowledgeable. Make sure you check their hours/ availability before visiting. You may need an appointment.

Portland Wine Company Is Putting Its Best Foot Forward

Portland Wine Company is turning 20, and it's celebrating with what it says will be Portland's first grape stomp. The Great Portland Grape Stomp is Saturday, Oct. 10, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the winery's Crushpad, 3201 SE 50th Ave. Teams of four go head to head in a five-minute stomp, and the team that makes the most juice wins a magnum of Love & Squalor wine. Tickets are $40. Bridgetown Bites

Amtrak's Shiny New Trains Are Right on Track

Amtrak put its first new Airo trains into service Wednesday on the Cascades route. Two trainsets now make four daily runs between Eugene, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. Each seats more than 300 passengers, nearly double the older equipment, with panoramic windows, USB-C ports and onboard Wi-Fi. The eight-trainset order is meant to replace the aging Cascades fleet by early 2027. KPTV

Davis Graveyard- 8703 SE 43rd Ave. Every October, one house in Milwaukie goes all out. Jeff and Chris Davis have been decorating their front yard since 1998 with homemade graves, mausoleums, follies and more. It’s free to view, with lights out at 10pm and the best special effects on Fridays and Saturdays. If you get inspired, they offer classes to make your own tombstones. WEBSITE
