Multnomah County Vector Control has found an invasive mosquito in Portland for the first time. The insect, Aedes notoscriptus, was trapped Aug. 25 at the Bybee Lake pumphouse near Kelley Point Park during routine checks. Native to Australia, it was first found in the Los Angeles region in 2014. Health officials say it can spread West Nile and chikungunya viruses, both currently found in the United States. Crews have searched for more and have not found any beyond the one. KPTV

Portland Monthly rounded up 13 pumpkin patches around the region, from Sauvie Island to Hood River. Plumper Pumpkin Patch grows 25 kinds of pumpkins and has pumpkin and apple cannons. Bella Organic's haunted corn maze runs Friday and Saturday nights through Oct. 30, cash only. Topaz Farm requires tickets on weekends through Oct. 25. Sandy River Park closed Thursday after a fisherman reported being charged by a bear, according to police. The fisherman told Sandy police he met the bear right after entering the park. Oregon State Police and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife went in to find the animal and make sure the park was safe. The 127-acre natural area has three trails: Sandy River, Jim Slagle Loop and Cedar Creek. Oregon is home to nearly 30,000 black bears.. KPTV

This deer (or a similar one) was on the sidewalk last night on SE Foster near the Floodplain Natural Area. We were so confused because we’ve never seen a deer like this so we looked it up and apparently this rare piebald deer has been spotted around Portland for a couple years now. What a beaut!
